Kimberly Orellana MSW, LCSW
Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Trained EMDR Therapist
Healing is a form of resistance.
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (TX LCSW#107399) who is an immigrant from Central America, I learned to navigate systems early. Growing up in an environment that was hostile towards immigrants led me to want to serve marginalized communities. Over a decade of engaging with communities of color through both professional work and political activism showed me the urgent need for actual trauma informed licensed therapists who are also native Spanish speakers. In every assessment, case management interaction—I’ve had with clients, it was clear that representation matters. Early in my career as a caseworker/social worker, and psychotherapist, I observed a clear lack of representation, with very few providers sharing the backgrounds of those they served.
I am a psychotherapist, who wields a multicultural lens and challenges the pervasive colonial narratives in the mental health field. Dismantling systems that allow people to internalize oppressive beliefs of themselves and others, aids my approach. You are not an individual operating in a silo state of mind but are a person that is impacted and shaped by every system you are a part of or have interacted with.
Trying to navigate oneself in this brave new world can feel demoralizing.
In a world where capitalism rages supreme and rewards people who put profit over individuals – always choose yourself. This world feels heavy and tough at this very moment and having a professional who can see you as you are and walk with you – can be transformative. Finding community is a form of resistance. Healing is a form of resistance. Community also includes hiring the right professionals who see how external and internal systems impact you.
My approach is affirming and grounded in evidence base modalities such as CBT, EMDR, IFS, among others. If you find yourself struggling with the state of the world or want to start breaking cycles that no longer serve you, schedule a session. I look forward to this collaborative journey where we (you and I) both hold space for you.
I do not accept insurance for many reasons, but I do offer deep sliding scales. Please do not let the cost deter you from reaching out.
